All Coaches Must Complete Concussion Awareness Training

New law goes into effect April 26th

Updated Thursday February 28, 2013 by Amherst Youth Soccer Association.

One of the stories of the season in the NFL in 2012 were concussions and the League's handling of players believed to be suffering the affects of one.  It issuch a big deal that hundreds of former players are currently suing the League, while dozens of players have agreed to donate their brains to science after they die.

While not at the level of the NFL, concussions in youth sports are just as important and the long term affects just as damaging.  With that in mind, the State of Ohio passed House Bill 143, commonly called the 'Return To Play' law.   It's goal is to create a standard across all youth sports for coaches and parents to follow in hopes of protecting children from the dangers of recurring concussions caused by lack of training.

House Bil 143 will go into effect on April 26, 2013, but coaches within Amherst Youth Soccer must begin to act NOW to prepare for the new law.  One requirement before you can take the field with your team is the completion of an On-Line course.

AYSA mandates that members use the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The NFHS requires a user to login but allows leagues to track coaches’ progress and allows coaches to log in and print their certification should they require a new certificate or provide AYSA with proof of compliance.

Follow these steps to complete the course:

1) Click on the button that says, please login to order. In the window that appears, click Register Now.

2) When your registration is complete you may "order" the free concussion course offered along the left hand side of the page. Continue following prompts. Although it may look like you'll be charged for the course, there is no cost.

3) Once you've completed "checkout," you'll be able to take the free online course.

4) When you've completed and passed the course, you have the option of printing a certificate of completion.

As a member of OYSAN, Amherst Youth Soccer is required to show proof that each Head Coach and Assistant coach has completed the training.  Our goal is to have this completed for ALL coaches by March 15.  Again, coaches that do not complete the course are considered to be in bad standing with OYSAN, thus NOT PERMITTED to coach their teams.

When you have finished the training, please submit your certificate, in PDF form, via email to
